Bruno de Souza Reis
Bruno has worked with coffee his whole life, taking after his father, and his parents before him. Bruno began his own career in coffee in 2013, when he took over the management of 1800 trees from his father. Over the intervening years, Bruno has gradually taken over the whole farm, planting new varietals and aiming for quality. Sítio São Geraldo is very small by Brazilian standards, at only 4.5 hectares, and this size allows for an even greater focus on several aspects of work on the farm. The steeper mountainsides here in Mantiqueira de Minas mean that many farm tasks are completed manually; mechanisation simply isn’t possible in the same way as it is in the rest of the country.

This lot was naturally processed, from a plot of the Arara varietal. Arara is a relatively new varietal, a natural crossing between Obata and Catuai that was discovered in 1988, but not stabilised and released for farmers until 2012. Arara is one of the most popular varietals across the growing regions of Minas Gerais, with many young plantations coming into full production over the past few seasons. Arara is resistant to leaf rust and to drought, so is well suited to the conditions here. It also produces excellent quality cups, with high sweetness and pronounced fruit character, here reminiscent of ripe peach atop the traditional dark chocolate and hazelnut character of Minas.

Mantiquiera de Minas
Located on the northern side of the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range, in the southern reaches of Minas Gerais, the Mantiqueira de Minas region is home to over 8000 coffee producers. It is officially recognised as a Protected Denomination of Origin for its unique tradition of production, and for the quality of coffee produced here.
Most producers in the region are smallholders who operate family farms. The region isdifferentiated by the more mountainous terrain and the resulting higher acidity and fruit character in the cup. Mostharvesting is still completed manually here. Among other practices, this keeps the heritage and tradition of coffee farming alive, while allowing for excellent quality and unique character.
